I recently spent several weeks solo traveling around El Salvador, and along with hiking up active volcanoes and beautiful waterfalls, tasting Salvadorian fruits in the local market was one of my favorite experiences.

Tasting these delicious and unique flavors will be an unforgettable experience that will make your trip even more special.

From nispero to sapote, these are nine must-try fruits in El Salvador that will tantalize your taste buds and give you an authentic taste of what this part of the world has to offer.

1. Anonas

If you’re visiting El Salvador between the months of June and September, be sure to find anonas – a sweet, seasonal fruit in El Salvador that is only available in the summer months!

Not only are anonas in El Salvador incredibly tasty and sweet, but they also provide numerous health benefits like protein, iron, calcium, and other vitamins.

Choosing the perfect anona is easy because they have a special way of ripening: they split open while still on the tree! So be sure to pick an anona that has a crack – this will ensure it’s full of flavor.

The inside part of the anona is edible. You’ll find both white and pink anonas, which more or less taste the same (delicious and sweet), but the pink anonas fruit tends to be a little bit creamier in texture.

Anonas were one of my favorite El Salvador fruits to try and I know you’ll feel the same!

⛑️ My number one safety tip for travelers, no matter where you’re going or how long your trip is, is to buy SafetyWing insurance to protect your trip.

2. Nisperos

One of the most unique and delicious fruits in El Salvador that any traveler must try is nisperos.

Nisperos, also known as Japanese loquats or Chinese plums, are particularly popular in El Salvador.

These fruits have smooth brown or orange-yellow skin with soft and creamy yellow or reddish flesh with large seeds in the center.

In El Salvador, nisperos are mostly eaten raw and have a sweet and sour taste, kind of like a mix of citrus fruits and peaches. They are best enjoyed when they are fully ripe so they can give you the sweetest flavor possible!

And because they’re so sweet, you can often find nispero jams and preserves.

Be sure to try nisperos during your trip to El Salvador – you won’t regret it!

3. Sapotes

The Sapote fruit is one of El Salvador’s most unique and delicious fruits that any traveler must try!

This Salvadoran fruit did not taste how I expected it to – it was better!

With its dark-colored outer peel and edible orange or reddish flesh inside, the Sapote tastes like a mix of sweet potato, pumpkin pie, and cantaloupe. You eat it kind of like an avocado, which makes it perfect for scooping out the inside to enjoy fresh or adding to smoothies and ice cream.

Don’t miss out on this amazing flavor – be sure to find the Sapote in your local market while visiting El Salvador!

4. Paternas

If you’re looking for a truly unique and delicious fruit to try while visiting El Salvador, then paternas are a perfect choice!

Paterna fruits are green pods with a row of seeds on the inside that have a white, soft, and sugary marshmallow-looking coating.

When eating paternas raw, just eat the white part surrounding the seeds – not the seeds themselves. Salvadorians love eating the boiled, softened seeds with salt and lemon juice. Yum!

So be sure to grab some paternas from your local market while in El Salvador – they will make your trip even more special!

5. Jocotes

The Salvadoran Jocote is one of the most popular fruits in El Salvador that belongs to the same family as cashew.

It looks kind of like an apple, with its red or green skin, and is often eaten raw – with or without the peel.

During the holy week, it’s a tradition in El Salvador to make a dish using jocote and honey called “Conserva de Jocote.” And a popular candy is made with jocote for local celebrations.

So don’t miss out on this amazing flavor – be sure to find some jocote from your local market while visiting El Salvador!

6. Nances

If you’re looking for a truly unique and delicious fruit to try while visiting El Salvador, then nances are an absolute must!

Nances kind of look like small yellow cherries, and taste sweet when they are ripe.

Locals often eat nances raw, but they can also be used in licours, juices, sodas, and syrups to make various sweet dishes (like snowcones, yum).

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to indulge in El Salvador’s native fruits – be sure to find some nances from your local market while traveling there!

7. Tamarindos

Travelers to El Salvador must not miss out on the opportunity to try tamarind, one of the most popular fruits in the region.

Tamarind is native to Africa but grown all over the world and loved by Salvadoreans for its unique flavor.

I actually tried tamarind for the first time in Asia, and couldn’t believe I had never had it before! So delicious.

The taste of tamarind ranges from sweet and sour to tangy and tart, depending on how ripe it is – so be sure to find some fully-ripe tamarinds at your local market!

You can eat it raw or use it as an ingredient in cooking – either way, you’re sure to enjoy this amazing fruit!

8. Mamones

Be sure to add mamones fruit to your must-try El Salvador fruit list when you visit the local markets!

Mamonas in El Salvador are tangy, tropical fruits found all over El Salvador, and are also known as Mamoncillo or Spanish limes.

Mamones Salvadoreños are small, green, round fruits only a few centimeters in diameter with an incredibly delicious flavor – sweet and sour like a mix of lime and lychee fruit.

You can eat the pinkish inside part of the mamon raw, spitting out the seeds. You’ll want to buy them in bulk because they are so hard to resist once you start snacking – I ate so many!

So be sure not to miss out on this amazing flavor – find some mamones from the local market while visiting El Salvador!

9. Caraos

If you’re looking for a truly unique and delicious El Salvador fruit to try while visiting, then carao fruit is an absolute must!

Carao is a very unique fruit, from the carob family, that’s only found growing in Central America and Hawaii.

Some people have nicknamed this fruit the “stinking toe” because it looks like a toe and smells like stinky cheese. But don’t let the odd smell deter you!

It tastes like carob fruit and molasses combined, or even like cherry and chocolate, with the added bonus of having natural treatment properties for anemia.

Locals often use carao to flavor milk, calling it “leche con carao”.

So don’t miss out on this amazing flavor – be sure to find the carao in your local market while visiting El Salvador!

⛑️ My number one safety tip for travelers, no matter where you’re going or how long your trip is, is to buy SafetyWing insurance to protect your trip.

10. Marañón (Cashew Apple)

The marañón fruit is originally from Brazil, but it’s extremely popular in El Salvador.

Nicknamed by Salvadorans as “fruita de la memorial” (memory fruit), the marañón fruit is the fruit that produces cashews! And it has great health benefits.

This curious-looking fruit boasts a tangy flavor that’s both sweet and sour, making it an ideal snack or ingredient in juices and jams. But what really sets the Marañón apart is its versatility – every part of the fruit can be used.

The cashew nut grows at the bottom of the fruit, while the flesh and juice make a refreshing drink, and even the leaves can be boiled and eaten as a vegetable.

Cashews tend to be fairly expensive in the United States, so I was very happy to find them to be so cheap in El Salvador!

So if you’re a foodie looking to expand your palate, or simply someone who loves to try new things, sampling the Marañón is a must when visiting El Salvador.

11. Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are a fruit – and El Salvador is famous for its rich and flavorful coffee!

Coffee is vital to the Salvadoran economy.

The coffee fruit, also known as the coffee cherry, is a small, round or oval-shaped fruit that starts out green, then turns red or yellow as it ripens. Inside the fruit are two seeds, which we know as coffee beans.

Each fruit contains one or two beans, depending on the variety of the plant. So in a way, coffee can be considered a fruit, and the beans themselves are the seeds of that fruit.

El Salvador has some of the best coffee plantations in the world, and I highly recommend you take a tour of one!

I’ve taken several coffee plantation tours during my time backpacking in Central America – you learn about the entire coffee-making process, from growing and harvesting the beans to roasting and brewing the perfect cup.
