U Nimman Chiang Mai is the perfect place for travelers who are looking for a rooftop pool in Chiang Mai but who don’t want to be in the touristy old town.

Living in Nimman was a wonderful experience for me. One of the best parts about living there was definitely the food – there are. some good restaurants to try! One of my favorite khao soi restaurants (a type of spicy noodle curry soup) is in this area: Khao Soy Maesai.

My Favorite Tours in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is one of the most popular destinations for travelers in Thailand.

From bustling night markets to exotic temples, there are so many experiences to explore here.

Taking tours of the city is an excellent way to get the most out of your visit. There’s something special about having a local guide show you around and tell stories about the history and culture of Chiang Mai that you wouldn’t otherwise hear.

As someone who first traveled to Chiang Mai as a solo traveler (I loved it so much that I later lived here for several months), I’m passionate about taking tours while I’m there. Plus, tours are one of my favorite ways to make friends on the road!

Doing so allows me to learn more about the city from people who live here, taste authentic dishes from street carts, and explore some hidden gems that are not listed in any tourist guidebook.

Selfie of me wearing a big straw farmer's hat and tasting a vegetable from the garden.
Taking cooking classes in Thailand and Vietnam is a great way to learn about the food and culture. Maybe they’ll give you a hat to wear like this one!

Tips for Visiting Chiang Mai, Thailand

When to Visit –  November-February are the most popular months to visit Chiang Mai because that’s when it’s coolest, but it’s also when the crowds are biggest. June-October is the rainy season, but it doesn’t rain all day (usually just 30 minutes once a day), and you’ll find great deals on hotels since it’s low season. AVOID February-April in Chiang Mai because that’s the burning season, and the air quality is infamously terrible.

Where to Eat – The food is so delicious and cheap in Chiang Mai! My favorite street food is at Changphuak Suki (get the stir-fried pork). And I love eating my way around the Sunday Night Market. If you need a sushi fix, Umai Sushi is incredible. Try Khao Soi, a specialty in Northern Thailand, at Khao Soi Lung Prakit Kad Kom (their beef Khao Soi is the best).

Airport Transfer – Book one of these private airport transfers for a stress-free arrival at any airport in Thailand!

Getting Around You don’t need a car to get around Chiang Mai City. Just walk or use the Grab app to order cheap taxis (it’s the Southeast Asian version of Uber). Tours are my favorite way to get around (I listed my favorite tours above). The local way is. touse the red Songthaew public trucks, just tell the driver where you’re going and hop in.If you’re comfortable on a scooter, it’s easy to rent one.

👉 Pro Tip: Taking the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or from Chiang Mai to Bangkok is a classic Thailand experience! I use this site to look up train and bus routes in Southeast Asia. Try to book at least a few days in advance because the trains do sell out, especially the lower beds. I recommend first or second-class sleeper cars that have air conditioning.

How to Dress – Opt for lightweight and breathable clothing due to the city’s tropical climate. Loose-fitting garments made of synthetic fabrics are my go-to. It’s also advisable to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples or other religious sites. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city’s vibrant markets and bustling streets.

Travel Insurance – I don’t go anywhere without travel insurance.

⛑️ My number one safety tip for travelers, no matter where you’re going or how long your trip is, is to buy SafetyWing insurance to protect your trip.

There’s nothing like cooling off in a pool with a glass of champagne in hand!
